Obiettivi formativi

The course will examine the contemporary history of South and Southeast Asia, in the international context, according to the methods of the Entangled History, which focuses on the connections and interweaving between geopolitical areas, political systems countries and their respective histories.

The course focuses on India and South Asia as a geopolitical crossroad between east and west and aims to highlight past and present processes that connect South and Southeast Asia at the international level, as well as at the economic level, and interactions with regional and international actors (China/Japan, United States/Europe).

The course is directed preferably to students who have a basic knowledge of Asia (linguistic, historical or political).

The course aims to provide the students with the following tools:

- acquire an in-depth knowledge of the Asian context

- to be able to independently draw up critical analysis of the historical, economic, social and political contexts under review

- to be able to come up with innovative research questions and perspectives.

Programma

The course will focus on the challenges that contemporary Asia is facing, with particular reference to the most recently developments, namely the implications of the war in Ukraine on the international policies of the three powers, India, China and Japan. The course will take into consideration the changes in the international positioning of these countries and the reshaping of their polities after the Ukrainian crisis.

The course will examine India’s and China’s common and diverging positions, since both countries have strong ties with Russia and fluctuating relations with the United States. New scenarios will be examined, especially regarding India’s and China’s pursuit of a multipolar world order.

Is all this new? During the lessons we will discover that both powers, from the end of the Cold War onwards, relaunched multipolarism as an alternative to bipolarism or unipolarism.

Japan’s position will be compared: it is a strong ally of the US, that is increasingly embracing American positions, in order to strengthen its anti-China policy.

All these aspects will be analysed from a historical perspective.

The course will examine the following pecific topics:

The outbreak of the war in Ukraine: India’s and China’s foreign policies before the war

India’s and China’s foreign policies after the outbreak of the war

The limits of Xi Jinping's asseritve policy: the failure of the 'zero COVID' strategy and the Taiwan issue

Reading

The students are supposed to chose a chapter of the following volume:

Francesa Congiu, Barbara Onnis, Fino all'uòtimo Stato.

India: a historical analysis of its relations with the USSR and Russia

Nehruvian India and the "Third Way"; the Non-Alignment

Decolonisation? A critique of the decolonisation discourse

The colonisation of India and China

National responses to colonisation

Birth and growth of Japanese nationalism

Japan from defeated country to world power

Japan’s international decline and its political dependence on the United States.

Students of Arabic language can follow a specific program.

The results of these presentation will have an impact of 25% on the evaluation.

All teaching materials will be made available at the link "materiale didattico"

The Nutmeg’s Curse: Non-human voices and more-than-human stories

Are humans the only beings that are endowed with the ability to communicate and make meaning? For a long time it was assumed that this was axiomatically true. But one effect of our increasingly climate-disrupted world is that it has made us aware that our minds and bodies are deeply intertwined with many other organisms, entities and forces. This lecture examines some of these entanglements through the story of the nutmeg tree.

Wed. Oct 25: 12-14

Embattled Earth: Commodities, Conflict and Climate Change in the Indian Ocean.

Since the time of Vasco da Gama’s voyage, the Indian Ocean has been the theatre of intense imperial rivalries over commodities and resources. For centuries the main players in these conflicts were Western colonial powers, but over the last few decades the countries of the Indian Ocean rim have themselves become major consumers of commodities and resources. As such they are now among the principal drivers of anthropogenic climate change, an ongoing process that will have catastrophic consequences for the billions of people who live around the Indian Ocean. This lecture explores the continuities between the resource conflicts of the past and the future by focusing on two transformative imperial wars: the Anglo-Dutch spice wars of the 17th century and the 1st Opium War of 1840-42. It also poses some related questions: are the imperatives of empire and military supremacy among the major drivers of climate change? If so, why are these issues generally elided? Does the fact that the discourse on climate change is largely produced within university-based contexts have anything to do with this elision?
