Obiettivi formativi

The aim of the course is to analyse how literature can be integrated as a language teaching material in EFL/ESL classes (English as a Foreing Language or Second Language), first by tracking down the place of literature in language classes from the early Grammar Translation Method  to the Communicative Language Teaching, then by discussing  the reasons for using the literary text as an input in TEFL or TESL (Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language). The course also aims at helping  students develop academic writing skills.

In particular, it addresses the following learning objectives (obiettivi formativi):

-Becoming aware of the historical development of teaching methods in Foreign Language Teaching, from the Grammar Translation Method to the Communicative Approach;

-Learning about the potentialities of using literary texts in TEFL/TESL;

-Acquiring knowledge of the variety of possible approaches in the planning and implementation of literature lessons;

-Learning how to develop an appreciation for different literary genres in secondary school students and English language learners in general, and how to motivate them;

-Acquiring strategies and techniques to teach literature in English, in particulare according to a modular approach;

-Learning how to plan a didactic module including objectives, intermediate assessment, and final evaluation.

-Activating a reflection on the formal and structural aspects of an argumentative text (linguistic register, lexical and syntactic choices, division of the text into paragraphs, introduction and conclusion) and acquiring the basic notions to write  an abstract, an article, a short essay or thesis in English.

Programma

The same programme applies to attending and non-attending students. Regular attendance is however advisable.

The course will be divided into two parts.

The first one (English literature teaching) will focus on planning a didactic module on a certain author, theme or movement, taking into consideration: objectives and competences to be achieved, interdisciplinary implications and theoretical assumptions, methodological approaches, choice of texts and didactic material, exercises and activities, assessment and evaluation.

The second part (academic writing) will lead students to a reflection on the differences between colloquial and formal language, in morpho-syntactic  and lexical terms, and on the structure of an argumentative academic text (abstract, article, essay, thesis).
