Obiettivi formativi
La formazione letteraria triennale, attraverso lo studio delle opere, degli autori e dei temi principali delle differenti tradizioni culturali, con il supporto di sussidi multimediali, è finalizzata all’acquisizione delle conoscenze fondamentali nel quadro storico-ideologico di riferimento e degli strumenti di base di analisi e commento critico-letterario dei testi. Attraverso lezioni frontali e discussioni in forma seminariale, che favoriscano la creazione di una
comunita' di apprendimento, questo corso intende fornire agli studenti una base solida della letteratura e cultura statunitense, fornendo anche una pratica di analisi del testo.This course aims at presenting the students with key literary and cultural texts produced in the U.S. in the 18th and 19th centuries. Students will develop reading, comprehension and critical response skills, as well as the ability to differentiate among literary genres and to critically discuss those texts

Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di utilizzare il lessico specifico della disciplina e cogliere le questioni relative ai generi letterari. Gli studenti saranno in grado di generare nuove conoscenze e interpretazioni complesse, a partire dai testi studiati. Più specificamente dovrebbero essere in grado di: 1) comprendere la diversità delle metodologie di analisi applicate, 2) riflettere sui temi specifici della cultura americana del Settecento e Ottocento.

Esame finale orale obbligatorioThere will be a mid-term exam (written), and an end-of term exam (written), with an oral exam at the end of the course. For the students (mostly "non frequentanti") who will not take the written exams, there will be only an oral exam covering the entirety of the program.

"19th c. Women, Revolutions and Reform"
Il corso considera il contesto atlantico rivoluzionario di fine Settecento/inizio Ottocento, focalizzandosi soprattutto sul legame fra rivoluzione haitiana, movimenti riformisti, schiavitù e formazione degli stati nazionali, concentrandosi su 3 nuclei principali: Rivoluzione haitiana, Trascendentalismo e Abolizionismo/anti-schiavismo. Si prenderanno in esame una varietà di testi di diversi generi letterari, che riguardano letteratura e politica e verranno considerati diversi stili e movementi letterari come sentimentalismo, gotico e romanticismo.
"19th c. Women, Revolutions and Reform"
This course will examine the literary responses to, and representations of the idea of revolution and reform during the late 18thc. and 19th c. During the course of the semester we will consider three clusters: the Haitian Revolution, Transcendentalism, and Abolitionism/Anti-slavery. Literary movements and styles such as sentimentalism, Romanticism, and the gothic will be considered in relation to the circulation of revolutionary ideas and ensuing paranoia or conservative backlash.
