Obiettivi formativi

LM37/ Prof. Della Valle

LM37/Prof. Della Valle

LM94/ Prof. Lukasik

Students will become familiar with the major English corpora available to date, as well as corpus-query systems, such as the Sketch Engine or CQP Web, and other software (such as AntConc and WordSmith Tools), for the analysis of contexts, collocations, text patterns etc. through word lists, n-gram lists, keyword lists, KWIC and word cluster tools. Students will learn how to use advanced electronic tools for sketching lexical profiles of terms and phraseologies, build their own specialized corpora for terminographic, academic writing and translation purposes.

Programma

LM37/Prof.

The course will be divided into two parts. The first part (academic writing) will lead students to a reflection on the differences between colloquial and formal language, in morpho-syntactic  and lexical terms, and on the structure of an argumentative academic text (abstract, article, essay, thesis). The second part (EFL teaching) will analyse the Italian official secondary-school curricula, with particular attention to pre-requisites and learning objectives. It will focus on planning a didactic module on a certain topic, taking into consideration: interdisciplinary implications and theoretical assumptions, methodological approaches, choice of texts and didactic material, exercises and activities, assessment and evaluation.

LM 94/Prof. Lukasik

This course will be addressed to MA students of Translation (LM94). It will focus on key concepts of English language corpora and corpus-based methodologies for vocabulary and terminology extraction. In order to investigate vocabulary and phraseological patterns (collocations, idioms), the tutor will introduce advanced tools for sketching lexical profiles of words and terms in English and in other languages. It will teach students how to build specialized ad hoc corpora, and how to use software for the compilation of word lists, bi-grams and multi-word units to meet the needs of EFL academic writing, terminography and translation. Monolingual and parallel corpora usefulness in translation and terminology will be explored. The course will present a wide range of texts in several fields of science and technology, including energy, environment, astronomy, medicine, and technology. The texts will be studied as regards their terminological diversity and specificity across various languages. The course will also involve collaborative work and the creation of specialist glossaries in these fields.
