Obiettivi formativi

 

Il corso riguarda la storia contemporanea dell'Asia meridionale e del Sud-Est asiatico nel quadro internazionale. Il metodo di analisi sarà essenzialmente quello della Storia Internazionale e della Imperial e Global History. 

Il corso è incentrato sull'India e sull'Asia meridionale, come crocevia geopolitico tra est e ovest e metterà in luce le dinamiche storiche e attuali che connettono l'Asia meridionale e il Sud-Est asiatico, sia sul piano della politica internazioale, sia su quello degli interessi economici. Si prenderanno in considerazione non solo le dinamiche interne all'area oggetto del corso, ma anche le interazioni con altri attori della regione (Cina e Giappone) e internazionali (Stati Uniti, Europa).

Il corso si rivolge preferibilmente a studenti che abbiano una conoscenza di base (linguistica, storica o politologica) dell'Asia. 

Il corso si prefigge l'obiettivo di fornire agli studenti gli strumenti per

- acquisire una conoscenza approfondita dell'area oggetto del corso

- essere in grado di formulare in autonomia analisi critiche dei contesti storici,  sociali e politici studiati

- essere in grado di proporre quesiti di ricerca e prospettive di studio innovativi

The course will examine the contemporary history of South and South east Asia in a comparative perspective, within the theoretical frame of Imperial and Global History. 

The course will focus on India and South Asia as the geopolitical crossroad between east and west. It will highlight past and presente connections between South and South East Asia, according to the International relations and economic interests.

The course will analyse the processes involving the area under review, as well as the interactions with other regional actors (China, Japan) and internazional actors (US, Europe, Russia).

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge about Asia (languages, history or politics).

- to acquire an indepth knowledge of the area under review

- to be able to critically and independently analyse the area under review from the historical, social and political point of view

- to be able to put forward innovative research questions and proposals

Ci si attende che, alla fine del corso, gli studenti abbiano raggiunto i seguenti risultati:

- avere acquisito una conoscenza approfondita della storia politica dell'Asia meridionale e sud-orientale contemporanea, nel quadro internazionale 

- avere acquisito una conoscenza delle trasformazioni contemporanee e attuali che riguardano la regione oggetto di studio, sul piano internazionale ed economico sociale

- avere migliorato la propria capacità di esposizione orale

- essere in grado di formulare e realizzare percorsi di studio e di ricerca originali, riguardanti i contesti e gli ambiti disciplinari oggetto del corso

By the end of the course students are expected to:

- obtain an in-depth knowledge of South and Southeast Asian contemporary political history, in the international context.

- to acquire a knowledge of present transformations involving the region under review, from the economic and social point of view, in the international context

- to have improved their verbal presentation skills.

- to be able to draw up and carry out original study and research programs concerning the contexts under review and the respective disciplines

The exam is oral in videoconference (Webex)

1 Students will manage the available time to properly answer the questions 2 The answers must be coherent and prove the capacity to properly reflect and to critically analyse the texts 3 The answers will be based on the comparison between specific case studies.
Assessment 1 The arguments will be represented by direct ansewrs to specific questions 2 The answers will be related to the reading list 3 The answers are supported by porper examples.

The overall evaluation will be based also on the active participation to class discussions and on students' presentations, whose results will be part of the final grades.

Attività di supporto

Le lezioni e le presentazioni degli studenti saranno supportate da audiovisivi power point. Gli studenti saranno invitati ad agiornarsi sui fatti in corso in Asia attraverso la lettura regolare di gironali e periodici, la consultazione di siti internet specializzati e di informazone, la visione e l'ascolto di rpgrammi televisivi e radiofonici.

Il corso si rivolge a studenti della Laurea Magistrale in Lingue Straniere per la Comunicazione Internazionale in lingua italiana (Dipartimento di Lingue – 9 CFU 54 ore) e Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation in lingua inglese (Dipartimento di Culture, Politica e Società – 6 CFU 36 ore)

Le prime 18 ore, di carattere introduttivo, riservate agli studenti di Lingue, saranno svolte in italiano, mentre la parte restante del corso sarà in lingua inglese.

Per gli studenti che non conoscono l'inglese, sarà possibile realizzare momenti di approfondimento in italiano.

La bibliografia per gli studenti del corso in Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation sarà interamente in inglese, mentre per gli studenti in Lingue Straniere per la Comunicazione Internazionale sarà in italiano, salvo diversa scelta da parte degli interessati.

All'inizio del corso saranno distributi testi o parti di testi agli studenti, che saranno invitati a leggerli, a farne una breve presentazione in aula (15-20 minuti) in concomitanza con le lezioni corrispondenti agli argomenti trattati dai tessti, e a discuterli con la docente e con i colleghi.

Il corso verte sulla storia dell'Asia meridionale e sudorientale dal periodo tardo coloniale all'attualità e affronta i processi collegati al nazionalismo e alle lotta di liberazione sia in Asia meridionale che nel Sud-Est asiatico e alle trasformazioni avvenute tra la fine della seconda guerra mondiale e la guerra fredda. Un riferimento specifico sarà rivolto alla nascita del Pakistan e del Bangladesh e agli assetti territoriali che ne sono scaturiti, così come alle spartizioni che hanno riguardato Vietnam e Corea.

Si riconosce all'India una posizione centrale e di primo piano nell'elaborare l'esperienza del non-allineamento come alternativa alle logica dei blocchi e come contrapposizione alle alleanze strategiche tra Stati Uniti, Inghilterra, Francia e le nazioni asiatiche coinvolte nel CENTO e nel SEATO, per proseguire con la creazione della Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Infine si analizzeranno l'attuale elaborazione di politiche economiche volte a rafforzare le alleanze strategiche e a creare nuovi equilibri in Asia, al di là dell'elegemonia cinese, attraverso la Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) prima e la Indo-Pacific Strategy in tempi recenti.

La colonizzazione dell'India e la costituzione di un sistema industriale tra la metà del XVIII e la metà del XIX secolo.

La colonizzazione europea dell'Asia sudorientale e la nascita dei nazionalismi

The corse is directed to the students of the Laurea Magistrale in Lingue Straniere per la Comunicazione Internazionale, in Italian (Dipartimento di Lingue – 9 CFU 54 ore) and Laurea Magistrale in Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation in English (Dipartimento di Culture, Politica e Società – 6 CFU 36 ore)

The introductory section of the course, of 18 hourse, is reserved to the students of Foreign Languages for Internarional Communication and the remaiming 36 hours, in English, will be opend to the students of both, Foreign Languages for International Communication and Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation.

Students who do not know English can attend some additional training.

The bibliography for the students in Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation will be in English, while for the students in Foreign Languages for International Communication will be in Italian, unless student will prefer to study in English.

At the beginning of the course, texts and parts of texts will be distributed to the students, who will be required to prepare brief presentations (15-20 min), according to the subjects treated in the respective lessons, and to discuss with the professor and the colleagues.

The course will examine the history of South and Southeast Asia from the late colonial period to the present. It will analyse the rise of nationalism and liberation struggles in South and Southeast Asia and the transformations that took place between the end of the World War II and the cold war.

A particular attention will be devolved to territorial partitions in South Asia (the foundation of Pakistan and Bangladesh) and in Southeast and East Asia (Vietnam and Korea).

The course will focus on the primary role of India in developing non-alignment as an alternative to bipolarism and to the alliances between United States, United Kingdom, France and the Asian nations involved in CENTO and SEATO.

The importance of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and an alternative to western economic models will be highlighted.

Finally, will be examined the present economic policies aiming to develop new balances in Asia, beyond the Chinese hegemony, from the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) to the Indo-Pacific Strategy.

The initial and introductory 18 hours are limited to students of the Laurea Magistrale in Lingue Straniere per la Comunicazione Internazionale and will be in Italian. The following part of the course will be in English. 

Students who do not know English can have additional training in Italian.

The bibliography for the students in Area and Global Studies for International Cooperation will be entirely in Enlgish, while for students in Lingue Straniere per la Comunicazione Internazionale will be in Italian, unless they will opt for English.

There is no specific program for non attending students
