Obiettivi formativi
L'obiettivo di questo corso è fornire agli studenti gli strumenti teorici e pratici necessari per intraprendere una carriera nell'ambito della traduzione tecnico-scientifica.
This course aims to investigate the fields of technical and scientific translation, equipping students with theoretical and practical knowledge and skills useful for a career in translation.

Alla fine del corso, gli studenti dovranno essere in grado di applicare le buone pratiche traduttive come l'utilizzo e la creazione e la gestione di glossari e banche dati terminologiche e aver sviluppato un'adeguata capacità di analisi di testi tecnico-scientifici sia in italiano che in inglese utilizzando i concetti e il metalinguaggio del settore. Dovranno inoltre essere in grado di produrre le proprie traduzioni giustificando le scelte traduttive e di valutare sia le proprie traduzioni che quelle esistenti.
At the end of the course, students will be expected to have developed good practices for storing and managing terminology, to be able to analyse technical and scientific texts both in Italian and in English using concepts and the metalanguage of the field, as well as produce their own translations, justify their own translation decisions and evaluate their own translations and the translations of others.

Le lezioni frontali ed esercitazioni pratiche in classe saranno accompagnate da attività di studio ed esercitazioni da svolgere in autonomia.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Durante il corso, gli studenti dovranno costruire il proprio portfolio che comprenda:
- due traduzioni a scelta tra quelle proposte nelle esercitazioni
- un esempio di database terminologico strutturato secondo le linee guida proposte
- un esempio di progetto di traduzione strutturato secondo le linee guida proposte
Inoltre, gli studenti dovranno consegnare un saggio di 2000 parole su un tema scelto tra quelli proposti negli esercizi alla fine di ogni capitolo del manuale del corso. Il portfolio e il saggio devono essere consegnati elettronicamente almeno 15 giorni prima della data dell'esame. Il giorno dell'esame, gli studenti dovranno consegnare una copia cartacea del saggio, che deve essere identica a quella elettronica.
Durante l'emergenza Coronavirus, gli studenti consegneranno elettronicamente il portfolio e il saggio attraverso la piattaforma Moodle almeno 15 giorni prima della data dell'esame. Gli studenti iscritti all'esame riceveranno una email con il link per la conferenza Webex che si terrà il giorno dell'esame. In tale sede verrà comunicato agli studenti il voto finale e, se necessario, verranno discussi il saggio e il portfolio. Durante l'orale non verranno poste ulteriori domande teoriche.
Throughout the course, students have to build a portfolio including:
- two translations of their choice among the ones suggested for practice
- one example of a termbase designed according to the guidelines proposed
- one example of translation brief designed according to the guidelines proposed
In addition, students must hand in a 2000-word essay on a theme chosen from the exercises proposed at the end of each chapter of the course manual. Both the portfolio and the essay must be submitted electronically at least 15 days before the exam. On the day of the exam, students will be requested to hand in a printed copy of the essay. The hard copy must be an exact copy of the electronic version.
During the Coronavirus emergency, students will submit the essay and the portfolio electronically through the Moodle platform at least 15 days before the exam. Students who have registered for an exam session will be emailed a link to the Webex conference that will take place on the day of the exam. During the Webex Conference, students will be told their final mark and, if necessary, asked some questions about the essay and/or the portfolio. No further questions about translation theory will be asked.

Durante il corso verranno affrontate due aree specifiche. La prima è quella della traduzione tecnica, in particolare verranno presi in considerazione:
- manuali di istruzioni
- schede prodotti e documentazione tecnica
- brevetti
La seconda area è quella scientifica, in particolare ci occuperemo di comunicazione scientifica lavorando su due tipologie di testi:
- ricerca scientifica specializzata (articoli scientifici e abstract)
- divulgazione scientifica
Inoltre, verrà fornita un'introduzione alla localizzazione di software e siti web, analizzando l'utilizzo della traduzione assistita e delle memorie di traduzione.
This course has two main areas of focus. The first one pertains to the technical domain, and deals with the translation of:
- Instruction manuals
- Product data sheets and technical brochures
- Patent specifications
The second one pertains to the scientific domain, in particular the communication of scientific knowledge:
- Specialized scientific research (scientific articles and abstracts)
- Popular science reporting
This course will also provide insights into the field of localization, investigating the use of computer-assisted translation tools and machine translation in the localization industry.

Gli studenti troveranno tutte le indicazioni su come redigere il saggio, le esercitazioni da includere nel portfolio e le modalità di consegna di tali esercitazioni e del materiale d'esame sulla piattaforma Moodle. Gli studenti sono invitati ad effettuare l'iscrizione spontanea a partire dalla data di inizio del corso.
Students will find all the information on how to write and hand in the essay, the termbase and the translation brief on the Moodle platform. Students will be required to self-enrol at the beginning of the course.
