Obiettivi formativi

Modulo 3: La traduzione dell'umorismo

Module 1. Translating museum texts

The goal of Module 1 is to develop students' knowledge of museum translation and their practical skills in translating different types of text in this field.

Module 2

The module will consider some of the most common strategies for the literary translation, with particular focus on fiction. Translation activities will be carried out during the classes.

Module 3: Translating humour

The module analyses translation studies and humour studies in conjunction. The aim is to introduce students to the fundamental aspects of verbal humour in English, identifying possible translation strategies by means of various examples taken from British and American culture.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Modulo 1

Module 1

Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical aspects of museum translation. They must also be able to effectively analyse the source text and to provide its translation accompanied by a commentary.

Module 2

Students will have to prove to be familiar with the various steps a literary translator goes through to convert a text of fiction.

Module 3

At the end of the course, students will be expected to have developed a deeper awareness of the mechanisms that regulate humour and to have increased their knowledge of the linguistic structures of cross-cultural translation.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

Modulo 1

Module 1

At the end of the module, students can sit a written test ("esonero") consisting in a translation with commentary. The students who do not take the "esonero" will sit an oral exam based on the comment of a brief essay written according to specific guidelines provided during the course.

Module 2

At the end of the module students will be assessed via a written translation test of a brief excerpt from a text of fiction. Students who will not give this part of this exam will be required to sit an oral exam on translation theory.

Module 3

At the end of the module there will be a written “esonero”. Students who do not take the "esonero" are required to take an oral exam on the assigned readings and on some practical examples of humour translation.

Programma

Modulo 1

Modulo 2

Clifford E. Landers. Literary Translation. A Practical Guide.

Modulo 3

Module 1

The goal of Module 1 is to introduce students to the practice of translating for museums. The contribution of translation to the economic and social challenges faced by these institutions nowadays will be discussed and the functions performed by translated museum texts will be illustrated. Students will translate a selection of authentic texts thus becoming familiar with the main skills, strategies and resources needed for ‘museum translation’. The ability to analyse and critically comment on one’s translation choices will also be developed.

Module 2

Clifford E. Landers. Literary Translation. A Practical Guide.

Module 3

Translating humour is an extremely complex task which implies a negotiation not only with meaning across cultures, but also with the human psyche. The module will focus on some of the general theories of two eminent scholars, Salvatore Attardo and Jeroen Vandaele. The lessons will tackle the difficulties of linguistic transcodification of humour, through a wealth of examples from various contexts, including social networks, email and memes.
