Obiettivi formativi

The workshop will present the students with different texts (a novel, films, critical essays and TV series) belonging to the gothic and horror genre and dedicated to the representation of the African American experience from slavery up to the present days. Through the theoretical tools offered by Gothic Studies, African American Studies, and Critical Race Theory, Students will develop reading and analytic skills and improve their critical thinking, learning how to use knowledge to better understand race relations in contemporary America through narrative. Part of the workshop will be dedicated to teaching practical skills: students will learn how to give a presentation (possibly supported by audiovisual tools), and how to write a proper academic essay.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Development of critical thinking and skills for individual study and learning. Development of critical and analytical tools drawn from the academic fields of Gothic Studies, African American Studies and Critical Race Theory, aimed at understanding the psychological, social, political, and cultural role of the construct of race in relation to modern and contemporary America. Development of practical skills: students will learn how to give a presentation in public and how to write an academic essay.

70% of the final mark will be determined by the student’s analysis of Beloved, to be delivered as a class presentation (15 mins max). The other 30% will be determined by the final essay (3000-3500 words), on a topic previously approved by the course instructor.

The final grade is either a "pass" or a "fail".

Programma

In “Dinner Guest: Me”, Langston Hughes scrive: “I know I am The Negro Problem / Being wined and dined, / Answering the usual questions / That come to white mind / Which seeks demurely / To probe in polite way / The why and wherewithal / Of darkness U.S.A.”

In “Dinner Guest: Me”, Langston Hughes writes: “I know I am The Negro Problem / Being wined and dined, / Answering the usual questions / That come to white mind / Which seeks demurely / To probe in polite way / The why and wherewithal / Of darkness U.S.A.” Acknowledging the obscurity that Hughes identifies within U.S. culture, Leslie Fiedler affirms how the American novel (and by extension, American narratives writ large) is “pre-eminently a novel of terror”, and how the main subject of this—unavoidably gothic—literary form is “the black man, from whose shadow we have not yet emerged.” Indeed, Black presence in America can symbolically and structurally be considered as an oppressed, repressed, and uncanny Other, a specter that was already inscribed in, and at the same time effaced from, the Enlightenment ideals upon which white hegemonic culture was founded—a ghost that has been haunting the U.S. ever since. Due to their strong roots in the collective unconscious and their ability to transfigure concrete socio-political issues into fantastic nightmares without marring their urgency, gothic and horror narratives are particularly apt case studies that can be investigated in order to unearth, analyze, and critique American anxieties connected to race/racist relations. But what happens when Fiedler’s “black man[kind]” ceases to be a subject and becomes the author? How have African American writers expressed conscious and unconscious racialized fears in textual form? This workshop will provide an in-depth examination of Toni Morrison’s Beloved, a paramount example of African American gothic that will be read together with films, TV Series, and Critical Essays. Thanks to the critical and theoretical tools offered by the intersecting fields of Gothic/Horror Studies, African American Studies, and Critical Race Theory, students will be introduced to the analysis of Black terror and the different modes in which it has been expressed in contemporary American culture. The final aim of the workshop is putting acquired knowledge to practical use: students will learn how to give a conference-style presentation and write an academic essay on a subject of their choice among those discussed in class.
