Obiettivi formativi

The workshop aims to deepen and consolidate scientific knowledge on languages and language through the analysis, in synchrony and diachrony, of artistic constructed languages. Unlike the natural languages that are the usual object of linguistics, artistic conlangs are artificial linguistic systems created with various purposes, mostly related to entertainment, often as a privileged part of conworlding (the creation of fictional worlds, as in the case of Tolkien's Middle Earth).

During the workshop, students will be stimulated to apply actively the linguistics knowledge and analytical practices acquired in formal academical courses in linguistics to the study (and creation) of conlangs. The fundamental objective is to elicit an active and productive critical reflection on the internal and external mechanisms of linguistic change and on the relationship between the linguistic and socio-cultural diasystem.

Participants will further their knowledge of typological and morphosyntactic elements of natural languages that go beyond university education and have uncommon characteristics - and which as such are often used for the construction of conlanguages - as well as the principles of linguistic change, enriching and thereby expanding knowledge and skills and developing new skills.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Students will develop skills related to the different levels of linguistic analysis ("grammar", but also sociolinguistics and pragmatics) through the examination of conlangs belonging to the most famous contemporary works of fiction (The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Star Trek and others); they will also acquire knowledge on languages that are typologically different from those typically studied in wide-spread academic curricula.

The workshop will adopt an inductive approach, which, starting from the presentation of materials taken from literature, film and television artistic products, will lead students to analyze linguistic structures and the possibilities offered by the system.

The workshop will have a moodle platform on which materials (texts, clips, power point presentations) will be uploaded and exercises assigned to be carried out, individually and/or in group.

Attendance is mandatory. The Workshop does not have a final mark, but "approval": obtaining the "approval" and the relative ECTS is conditioned by attendance frequency (70%) and the evaluation of the activities carried out during the Workshop.
