Obiettivi formativi

The objectives of the course are to develop students' critical abilities and help them familiarize with the analytic tools which will allow them to study the use of the English language in business communication of multinational companies. To acquire advanced oral and written English communication skills appropriate to workplace and professional settings, and an understanding of how these skills vary across different cultural contexts are part of the learning objectives. The theoretical approaches dealt with are corpus linguistics, multimodality and crisis management communication.

Students will learn how to use and create language corpora in order to carry out a lexical analysis of general and specialized terms, identify collocational and semantic characteristics, and compile glossaries. They will develop theoretical and applied competences and skills to conduct multimodal analyses of corporate websites, discovering the strategies used by companies to build their brands and their own corporate identity. Moreover, students will acquire theoretical and applied notions to be able to handle crisis management communication and will learn terminology and skills that can be applied to business negotiations, telephone conversations, written reports and emails, and professional presentations.

TITLE OF THE COURSE: ENGLISH IN PROFESSIONAL SETTINGS

This course deals with 3 main themes, aiming at the analysis of the use of English in business communication. The first theme focuses on corpus linguistics, its main concepts, and the application of this methodology to the study of specialized vocabulary, to the making of specialized glossaries and to the understanding of the discourse strategies adopted by companies in web communication. The second theme deals with the way in which international companies build their own brand and identity in their web pages. The third theme addresses the theoretical principles developed for the analysis of business crises and crisis management communication.
