Offrire una panoramica su una selezione di testi della letteratura e cultura araba del 19 secolo che invitino lo studente a riflettere sui concetti di "modernità" e "progresso storico" nella cultura araba della Nahdah (Diciannovesimo e Ventesimo secolo).
The course aims at offering an overview on a selection of texts taken from the canon of 19th c. Arabic literature. These texts will be the point of departure for a larger discussion on themes such as "modernity" and progress in the Arabic Nahdah (19th and 20th centurues).

Il corso si svolgerà in presenza salvo per gli studenti impossibilitati a frequentare, i quai potanno seguire le lezioni a distanza attraverso la piattaforma webex (e le registrazioni disponibili su moodle).
The teaching will be delivered in presence of the students. Students who can not attend classes in person will follow the courses on webex (and moodle)

Il corso si sviluppa attraverso la lettura e l'analisi di 8 brani in lingua araba che vertono su quattro temi principali:
1) Concetti: cosa è la modernità o "rinascimento"/Nahdah?
2)Lingua: cosa significa modernizzare la lingua? Come cambia la lingua attraverso le traduzioni?
3)Politica: cosa significa essere intellettuali moderni. Come cambia il ruolo politico e l'impegno civile nella modernità?
4)Generi: i nuovi generi letterari della moderità
I testi scelti verranno analizzati e tradotti dagli studenti in classe e a casa e discussi a lezione.
Alla fine del corso ogni gruppo di studenti discuterà un argomento portando esempi dai testi trattati.
During the course eight short pieces of literature will be taken from major authors of the Arabic Nahdah and will be analyzed and discussed in class.
The four themes that will be delat in the texts and discussed in class are:
Concepts: What is modernity-"renaissance" - Nahdah?
Langage: what does it means to modernize the language? How does the langiage change thrugh the tranlations?
Politics: Wjat does it means to be modern intellectuals? What is the new political and civic engagement of the intellectuals?
Genres: the new literary genres ofthe 19th and 20th centuries.
Texts will be translated ad analyzed in class and at home by students and discussed in class.
