Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento di LETTERATURA ANGLO-AMERICANA (annualità unica) rientra nell'ambito della formazione letteraria triennale. La formazione letteraria triennale, attraverso lo studio delle opere, degli autori e dei temi principali delle differenti tradizioni culturali, con il supporto di sussidi multimediali, è finalizzata all'acquisizione delle conoscenze fondamentali nel quadro storico-ideologico di riferimento e degli strumenti di base di analisi e commento critico-letterario dei testi. Attraverso lezioni frontali e discussioni in forma seminariale, che favoriscano la creazione di una comunita' di apprendimento, questo corso intende fornire agli studenti una base solida della letteratura e cultura statunitense, fornendo anche una pratica di analisi del testo.
This course aims at presenting the students with key literary and cultural texts produced in the U.S. in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The course is thematic, focuses on literary and visual texts, and uses contributions from cultural studies, histories, the social sciences, visual and urban studies as its field of reference. Students will develop reading, comprehension and critical response skills, as well as the ability to differentiate among literary genres and to critically discuss those texts in ways that are not merely descriptive, but also critical and analytical.

Questo insegnamento sviluppa conoscenza e capacità di comprensione, autonomia di giudizio critico e abilità comunicative e organizzative. Attraverso presentazioni frontali e discussioni in classe e lo studio individuale dei testi primari e secondari dell'insegnamento , gli studenti acquisiscono strumenti critici e analitici per comprendere in prospettiva la tradizione culturale e letteraria statunitense del XIX, XX e XXI secolo. Imparano altresì a inquadrarli nelle problematiche critiche, storiche, culturali e interpretative a cui quei testi fanno riferimento.

Due esami scritti, un colloquio orale. Gli esami scritti vengono offerti durante il corso per gli studenti frequentanti sotto forma di "esoneri". Per tutti vengono regolarmente offerti durante le regolari sessioni di esame, una volta per sessione (maggio, settembre, gennaio, dettagli a questo link), sino alla sessione di invernale 2022, dopo la quale il programma del corso cambierà. E' necessario aver superato gli esami scritti per poter essere ammessi al colloquio orale finale. Le studentesse e gli studenti che non superano la prova scritta sono invitati a contattare il Docente con tempestività. ATTENZIONE: Per essere ammessi all'esame scritto, gli studenti NON FREQUENTANTI (o che hanno frequentato sporadicamente) dovranno effettuare un colloquio con il docente ALMENO 30 GIORNI PRIMA DELL'ESAME SCRITTO - e preferibilmente prima dell'inizio del corso.
Class partcipation and discussion of the relevant texts. Two written exams (offered both during and after the course, one final oral interview after passing both written exams - (detailed calendar at this link). Exams for this class can be taken until the Jan. 2022 winter session. PLEASE NOTICE: Students who have attended the course sporadically (or not attended at all) will be admitted to the written exam only if they have met with the professor AT LEAST 30 DAYS before the written exam, and preferably before the start of the course.

COURSE TITLE: AMERICAN CULTURE IN THE COLD WAR

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This curse will cover the transformations in US society during the “long decade” spanning from the end of WWII to John Kennedy’s assassination in December 1963. Reading novels and essays from and about that period, as well as watching film/video and listening to music from that era, we will try to unpack the launcing of the late 20th century. e will explore an era characterized by social, political an aesthetic tensions involving the Cold War and the fear of atomic annihilation, changing attitudes towards sexuality, the Rock n Roll revolution, the rise of the Civil Rights Movement, the emergence of an affluent middle class focused on family values and changing lifestyles involving suburbanization, television, youths, women, and much more.
PREREQUISITES: Good proficiency in written and spoken English, a desire to learn and participate in classroom activity, and a curiosity for all things American highlight the ideal profile of students in this course.

Students must OWN copies of the following texts and bring the relevant books to class at each session. PLEASE NOTICE. Kindle and other e-book versions of the texts are not suitable for academic STUDY.B. STUDENTS MUST DOWNLOAD and study a course reader (parts 1 and 2, available from the course blog at the start of weeks 1 and 6) containing essays and other materials relevant to the course.
C. STUDENTS MUST WATCH films and other video excerpts, many of them included in the online lectures. These will be presented during class and will be included in the examination questions.
