Obiettivi formativi

L'insegnamento di LETTERATURA INGLESE (prima annualità) rientra nell'ambito della formazione letteraria triennale.

Comprensione del ruolo della letteratura e dell'arte nella costruzione dell'immaginario di una collettività.

Conoscenza della storia della letteratura inglese dalle origini al Settecento e del suo rapporto con la società.

Acquisizione di strumenti critici basilari e di categorie interpretative ed estetiche, anche al fine di un'eventuale stesura di una dissertazione di argomento letterario.

Conoscenza dei principali generi letterari e delle loro modalità espressive. Identificazione di tematiche e problemi ricorrenti nei testi.

A critically aware understanding of literature and art and its relations with the collective imagination. A basic understanding of British history and the literary history of England from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. Acquisition of critical tools and theoretical categories that may be applied to the analysis of texts. Specific preparation offered to those students who are considering writing a thesis on a literary topic. A close look at some fundamental literary productions.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Al termine del ciclo di lezioni gli studenti dovrebbero aver acquisito:

- conoscenza dei periodi, dei movimenti, delle tendenze, degli autori e dei testi principali della letteratura inglese dall'epoca anglosassone all'illuminismo e alla nascita del novel

- capacità di inquadrare i testi nei loro contesti storici e culturali

- capacità critiche

- capacità di sviluppare, quando opportuno, prospettive personali e di costruire argomentati punti di vista originali riguardo ai testi letti.

At the end of this course, students are expected to:

- have a good knowledge of English literature, literary currents, authors and texts, from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Enlightenment and the rise of the novel;

- have improved their capacity to contextualize authors and texts;

- have acquired critical skills;

- have a better idea of how to research and write an academic essay;

- have developed an ability to provide personal perspectives and construct convincing interpretations of the texts studied.

Modalità di insegnamento

L'insegnamento si baserà su 54-60 ore di lezione frontale con l'ausilio di supporti informatici e multimediali, integrate, se possibile, da alcune ore dedicate ad approfondimenti e close readings, durante le quali sarà anche possibile interloquire in forma seminariale. Le lezioni si terranno in inglese, con eventuali riassunti finali in italiano.

The course will include 54-60 hours of traditional lessons and multimedia presentations, and, if feasible, some extra hours devoted to close readings and in-depth analyses of texts. Students will be encouraged, whenever possible, to ask questions and express their personal views. Short summaries in Italian will be provided, if necessary, at the end of each lesson.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

Il voto sarà basato sull'esame orale. L'accesso a quest'ultimo sarà tuttavia subordinato al superamento col punteggio minimo di 15/30, a fine corso, di un test a risposte multiple su storia della letteratura e argomenti connessi (storia inglese, terminologia letteraria e nozioni basilari di metrica). Il voto dell'orale, in trentesimi, prenderà in considerazione:

- conoscenza della materia

- capacità espositive

- apporti originali e contributi personali

The final grade will be based on the oral exam. Prior to the latter students will be asked to pass, with a score of at least 15/30, a multiple-choice test on the history of English literature and related topics (British history, literary terminology, basic notions about verse and metrics, etc.). The final grade will be based on knowledge, on fluency and organization in answers, and – when applicable – on original and personal contributions to the discussion of texts.

Nel periodo in cui si terrà il corso si svolgerà, a cura di docenti del Dipartimento, una serie di conferenze e seminari collegati agli argomenti trattati nelle lezioni, a cui gli studenti saranno invitati a partecipare.

Programma

La natura e i margini dell’umano.  Il concetto di natura è stato oggetto di molta attenzione, elaborazione e riesame da parte tanto dei filosofi quanto degli autori di letteratura immaginativa nel corso dei secoli.  In riferimento sia agli esseri umani che al loro ambiente, si tratta, in un certo senso, di una nozione chiave le cui variazioni possono essere utilizzate per misurare la distanza tra ogni fase della storia culturale europea e quelle che la precedono e la seguono.  L’humanitas medievale lascia il posto alla prospettiva umanista, con la sua visione largamente innovativa degli esseri umani e dei loro rapporti con il mondo che li attornia.  Il XVII secolo inaugura poi una maniera completamente diversa, proto-antropologica, di considerare il problema.  Nei testi letterari, insieme con tentativi espliciti di definire o riformulare l’idea di natura nelle sue differenti implicazioni, queste revisioni hanno spesso comportato lo sforzo di identificare l’esatta conformazione degli esseri umani attraverso l’invenzione di creature situate al confine tra il pienamente umano e qualche forma di alterità.  Il corso cercherà di tracciare una genealogia delle categorie della natura, della civiltà e dell’umano nella letteratura inglese basandosi su una serie di testi esemplari prodotti tra il Medioevo e l'età dell'Illuminismo.

Nature and the Margins of the Human.  The concept of nature has received a great deal of attention, elaboration and reconsideration on the part of philosophers as well as writers of imaginative literature over the ages.  In application to both human beings and their environment, this, in a sense, is a key notion whose variations may be used to measure the distance between each phase in the cultural history of Europe and the ones which preceded and followed it.  Medieval humanitas gave way to the perspective of humanism, with its largely innovative outlook on humans and their relations with the world that surrounded them.  The 17^th century then inaugurated a completely different, proto-anthropological way of considering the problem.  In literary works, along with direct efforts to define or reformulate the idea of nature in its various implications, such revisions have often entailed attempts to pinpoint the exact constitution of human beings by inventing creatures located at the boundary between the fully human and some form of otherness.  This course will try to trace the genealogies of the categories of nature, civilization, and the human in English literature on the basis of a series of exemplary texts produced between the Middle Ages and the age of Enlightenment.

— some basic notions about the evolution of the English language, from Anglo-Saxon to modern English.

7. Literary Terminology and metrics:

— a knowledge of the most important genres, forms, features, rhetorical devices and figures by which literary works identify themselves. A possible reference text for these notions is the Appendix entitled “Poetic Forms and Literary Terminology” in The Norton Anthology of English Literature. As for metrics, basic notions about the iambic pentameter and the sonnet structure will be provided during the course.
