- An excellent competence in oral and written English is required, preferably at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students must be knowledgeable about the main features of text analysis and able to consult dictionaries online. A good knowledge of Italian culture and language is required. It is advisable to have a PC or tablet to carry out in-class learning activities.
The course is for students of LM37, LM38 only with Italian L2, and English and American Studies.
A prerequisite for the exam is the successful completion of the exam English Language 1 Magistrale and of Lettorato Magistrale 2, which will contribute to the final grade. - Oggetto:

The course TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE is an introduction to the use of audiovisual texts, audiovisual translation (AVT) and media accessibility (MA) in English Language Teaching.
The course focuses on linguistic, cultural and technical issues and on audiovisual materials which are useful for English language teachers. The course has been devised taking into account the professional profile of English language teachers and of language and cultural mediators.

At the end of the course students will be able to deal with methodologies and techniques for teaching the English language (and other foreign languages) through audiovisual texts, audiovisual translation and media accessibility.
More specifically:
a) Knowledge and understanding: students must know the main methodologies, techniques and tools for teaching the English language through audiovisual texts, taking into account the fields of didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) and film adaptation studies.
b) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: students must be able to design and develop teaching activities using audiovisual texts and audiovisual translation. For instance, the exploitation of film adaptations of literary works to teach literature and culture; the use of audio descriptions of films/TV series/documentaries/museums/artworks as well as the use of subtitling and dubbing to develop teaching activities aimed at enhancing listening/speaking/reading/writing skills and cultural issues. Students must also know how to use software tools and ICT tools to teach the English language.
c) Making judgments: students must be able to assess the feasibility of the application of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) modes (e.g. dubbing, subtitling, voiceover) and Media Accessibility (MA) practices (e.g. subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing - SDH, audio description - AD) in English language teaching and learning.
d) Communication skills: students must be able to discuss the main methodologies and techniques used in Didactic Audiovisual Translation and to explain how audiovisual texts and audiovisual translation activities can be used in primary and secondary education.
e) Learning skills: students must be able to discuss and to explain theoretical and practical elements involved in the teaching of English and other languages through audio and visual media and through audiovisual translation.

TITLE: AUDIOVISUAL TEXTS AND AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING.
The course is an introduction to the use of audiovisual material, audiovisual translation (AVT) and Media Accessibility (MA) in English Language Teaching. We will discuss the following topics.
1) Teaching language, literature and culture through films: adaptation studies. Film adaptations of literary texts and their Italian translations.2) Talking about emotions, stereotypes, multilingualism, awareness of English language varieties, linguistic and cultural issues through films, TV series, songs.
3) Enhancing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through audiovisual media and audiovisual translation.
4) Audio description for the blind and visually impaired as an educational tool: film, TV and museum audio description. Use of audiodescription software.
5) Software, platforms, websites for English Language Teaching (ELT).- Oggetto:

Lectures and workshops, in English. Use of powerpoint presentations and audiovisual material. Use of software tools and platforms. Use of computers. All the materials used in class will be available on the Moodle page of the course. Active participation of students is requested. If possible: seminars with experts in the field of audiovisual translation.

The exam is in English.
Oral exam: powerpoint presentation and 2-5 questions on the selected readings.
