Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento di LETTERATURA ANGLO-AMERICANA rientra nell'ambito della formazione letteraria triennale. La formazione letteraria triennale, attraverso lo studio delle opere, degli autori e dei temi principali delle differenti tradizioni culturali, con il supporto di sussidi multimediali, è finalizzata all'acquisizione delle conoscenze fondamentali nel quadro storico-ideologico di riferimento e degli strumenti di base di analisi e commento critico-letterario dei testi. Attraverso lezioni frontali e discussioni in forma seminariale, che favoriscano la creazione di una comunita' di apprendimento, questo insegnamento intende fornire a studenti e studentesse una base solida della letteratura e cultura statunitense, fornendo anche una pratica di analisi del testo.
This course aims at presenting the students with key literary and cultural texts produced in the U.S. in the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The course is thematic, focuses on literary and visual texts, and uses contributions from cultural studies, histories, the social sciences, visual and urban studies as its field of reference. Students will develop reading, comprehension and critical response skills, as well as the ability to differentiate among literary genres and to critically discuss those texts in ways that are not merely descriptive, but also critical and analytical.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi
Al termine dell'insegnamento coloro che parteciperanno saranno in grado di utilizzare il lessico specifico della disciplina e cogliere le questioni relative ai generi letterari. Studenti e studentesse saranno in grado di generare nuove conoscenze e interpretazioni complesse, a partire dai testi studiati. Più specificamente dovrebbero essere in grado di: 1) comprendere la diversità delle metodologie di analisi applicate, 2) riflettere sui temi specifici della cultura americana dal Settecento al periodo contemporaneo. Impareranno altresì a inquadrarli nelle problematiche critiche, storiche, culturali e interpretative a cui quei testi fanno riferimento.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
WOMEN IN/AND THE AMERICAN NOVEL
The purpose of this course is to examine how women are represented in, and write American novels from its beginnings to 1990, to understand its various historical, cultural and discursive contexts, and to become more skilled in critical reading, writing, and thinking. The course explores how gothic, romantic, realist, and naturalist movements took shape and how various writers negotiated questions about American identity, race and gender, religious belief, and economic difference. At the same time, it also closely examines the ways sentimental, gothic, romantic, evangelical, and other discourses contributed to the American novel.
PREREQUISITES: Good proficiency in written and spoken English, a desire to learn and participate in classroom activity, and a curiosity for all things American highlight the ideal profile of students in this course.
