Agli studenti è richiesta una conoscenza almeno pre-intermedia dell'inglese a livello B1, secondo il Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), e tale da poter garantire la comprensione e l'assimilazione dei concetti esposti a lezione. Anche la prova scritta deve essere svolta in lingua inglese. La valutazione finale sarà integrata con l'esito della prova propedeutica (lettorato) d'inglese del primo anno, che va obbligatoriamente superata prima dell'esame. Students are supposed to have achieved at least a pre-intermediate level of English (B1), according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and to show competence in written academic English. Moreover, students are required to have passed the first year practical language test ("prova propedeutica"), whose result will be integrated with the Lingua Inglese final mark.

Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento di LINGUA INGLESE (prima annualità) rientra nell'ambito della formazione linguistica triennale e consiste in una introduzione allo studio dell'inglese e delle sue varietà. Si propone una riflessione critica sulla lingua quale fenomeno storico, sociale e culturale al fine di comprendere i fattori che hanno reso l'inglese la lingua franca della comunicazione globale.
Si osserveranno:
- i passaggi fondamentali della storia della lingua inglese ed i principali fenomeni di variazione linguistica.
- le basi di fonetica e fonologia inglese.
- i concetti chiave della grammatica (morfologia e sintassi), del lessico e della fraseologia della lingua inglese standard.
The first-year ENGLISH LANGUAGE course provides a general introduction to the study of English and its varieties.
The course develops a critical view of English as a historical, social and cultural phenomenon, and discusses the factors that make English the lingua franca of global communication.
At the end of the course, students will
- know the main stages of the history of the English language and the essential phenomena of linguistic change.
- acquire the bases of English phonetics and phonology.
- master the fundamental concepts of standard English: grammar (morphology and syntax), lexis and phraseology.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi
L'insegnamento consentirà di approfondire i seguenti ambiti di competenza:
- Conoscenza e comprensione: saper riflettere sul rapporto tra lingua e storia, sulle varietà e le tipologie dell'inglese globale, sulla comunicazione interculturale.
- Capacità di applicare conoscenza e comprensione: descrivere la lingua inglese in vari contesti d'uso.
- Autonomia di giudizio: sviluppare la consapevolezza delle differenze principali tra italiano e inglese, riconoscere le varietà, i registri, ed un adeguato uso delle forme lessicogrammaticali in relazione ai contesti e alle tipologie testuali.
- Capacità di apprendere: collegare le conoscenze di lingua (speaking, writing, listening, reading) alla linguistica (lo studio dei fenomeni di variazione degli usi linguistici di tipo storico-culturale, geografico e sociale)
- Abilità comunicative: raggiungimento di un solido livello B2 attraverso il lettorato.
The course will enable students to develop the following skills:
- Knowledge and understanding: ability to evaluate the relationship between language and history
- Applying knowledge and understanding: describe the varieties of global English and their function in various contexts with special reference to intercultural communication.
- Making judgements: become aware of the main differences between Italian and English, contexts, registers, differences in lexicogrammar according to contexts and genres.
- Learning skills: link their language skills (speaking, writing, listening, reading) to linguistics (the study of the phenomena of variation in usage from a historical, cultural, geographical and social point of view)
- Communication skills: B2 level of English by attending the Lettorato (language classes).

L’insegnamento, An Introduction to Present-day English, presenta le strutture della lingua inglese e tratta della sua diffusione a livello mondiale. Offre una panoramica sull'evoluzione storica dell'inglese, sulle sue principali varietà geografiche, sulle sue funzioni in diversi contesti sociali e sulle motivazioni politiche, storiche e culturali che ne spiegano l'attuale ruolo internazionale. Si descrivono in modo approfondito la fonologia, la morfologia e la sintassi, il lessico e la fraseologia, con osservazioni contrastive sulle principali differenze rispetto alla lingua italiana.

La variazione linguistica e il cambiamento diacronico.
La fonetica e la fonologia dell'inglese.

Course title: An Introduction to Present-day English.
The course is an introduction to the structures of the English language and its spread throughout the world. It offers an overview of the historical development of English, its main geographical varieties in the world, its functions in various social contexts and the political and cultural reasons which explain its current international role. The course focuses on English phonology, morphology and syntax, lexis and phraseology, providing contrastive insights into the main differences from Italian.

I/le partecipanti sono invitati/e a svolgere gli esercizi di approfondimento ed a contribuire attivamente alla discussione attraverso un forum in Moodle per la disamina di concetti, la condivisione di esperienze.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
La valutazione avviene attraverso una prova finale (valutazione sommativa 100%) che consiste in una prova scritta, valutata in trentesimi, con esercizi sulle strutture dell'inglese (trascrizione ortografica di un brano in trascrizione fonetica, analisi strutturale e funzionale di una o più frasi date, riconoscimento di strutture morfologiche o fraseologiche, ecc.); una domanda aperta sulla storia e sulla diffusione dell'inglese nel mondo e domanda aperta o domande a scelta multipla rigurdanti aspetti di fonologia, grammatica e lessicologia inglese.
La valutazione finale sarà integrata con l'esito della prova propedeutica (lettorato) d'inglese del primo anno, che va obbligatoriamente superata prima dell'esame (9 CFU dati da 50% esito del lettorato, 50% corso di ufficiale di Lingua Inglese).

To qualify for the 9 CFU/ECTS provided by the English language courses (all years), students are required to pass the lettorato test (language courses) of each year prior to sitting any corresponding Lingua Inglese (English Linguistics) exam.
The final grade is the average of the mark obtained in the lettorato test and the mark obtained in the Lingua Inglese (English Linguistics) exam, which must be passed – 18, the minimum pass mark.
However, if you have any recent certification attesting at least a B2 proficiency level in English, please contact the professor in charge of the Lingua Inglese course you are attending (or planning to attend) in order to check whether you qualify for a lettorato test waiver.
Assessment is by means of a final examination (summative assessment 100%) consisting of a written test, marked in thirtieths, with exercises on the structures of English (orthographic transcription of a passage in phonetic transcription, structural and functional analysis of a given sentence, recognition of morphological or phraseological structures, etc.), an open question on the history and spread of English throughout the world and open or multiple-choice questions concerning aspects of English phonology, grammar and lexicology.
Students are required to have passed the first-year language test ("prova propedeutica/ lettorato") in advance, whose result will be integrated with the Lingua Inglese final mark (9 CFU given by 50% lettorato mark, 50% English Linguistics.
