A good command of Portuguese (B2) is required. The teaching is given in Portuguese and is aimed at both the first and second year of Portuguese of the Master's Degree. Differences in educational background among students will be enhanced and progressively leveled by the group dynamics implemented during the classes, during which an intensive translation workshop will take place. It is specified that any geographical variant of Portuguese is valid for training.

To be eligible to take the exam, one must pass the propaedeutic exam of the first/second year of Lettorato aimed at master's students. Portuguese Language I (magistral) exam is concurrent with Portuguese Language II (magistral) exam. For non-attending students, it will also be necessary to register for the Esoneror call, the outcome of which is indispensable to pass the Orale call.

The teaching of PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE (I and II years) falls within the scope of the literary, philological, linguistic, artistic and pedagogical training provided in the master's degree program, with paricular regard for the practice of translation.

Output job profiles, such as linguistic-cultural mediation in public bodies and international institutions, in interpreting, translating and editing, editing and proofreading of specialized texts, including those of a multimedia nature; educational services in multilingual and multicultural contexts, for example in the hospitality and tourism sector, and finally in language teaching, were taken into account in the definition of the program.

At the end of the course, students should have acquired a good and operational command of the Portuguese language in the literary field, understand a wide range of complex texts, and be able to recognize their implicit meanings. Students should also be able to express themselves using Portuguese in a flexible and effective manner and demonstrate the ability to produce well-constructed statements on literary topics with a confident control of connectors and elements of textual cohesion (C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

It expects the student to have acquired masterful skills (at the C2 level in the European Framework of Languages) in the areas of writing, literary and specialized translation, and intercultural mediation, and to be able to carry out professional activities in publishing, literary and theatrical creation, cultural and social mediation, cultural event planning, and communicating in Portuguese. Especially, it is desirable to develop knowledge applied to the practice of translation and skills of understanding, independent judgment and creativity exercised in a collective environment.

The course content corresponds to the proposed laboratory methodology (see Teaching Methods). Therefore, it is recommended to attend and actively participate. In the first part of the course, we will perform a number of listening and reading exercises, interpretation, translation from Portuguese language from texts (songs, poems) and situated improvisation exercises.

In the second part, we will read, discuss (in Portuguese) and translate some scenes from two theatrical texts (yet to be defined) from Portuguese to Italian and from Italian to Portuguese. We will present a public reading of the translated scenes for Portuguese Language Day.

All exercises can be found in the text “Didactics of Language” in the teaching materials. Keep in mind that the level we attend is C1.

Exercises in listening and reproduction (of literary texts expressed in poetry, music and drama) and role-playing and staging of situated conversations will be offered.
Those exercises come from the performing arts being adapted for the purpose of optimizing glottodidactic learning, that is, keeping in mind that: language is a speaking body, i.e., organic expressive movements; that empathic and emotional impact facilitates memorization; learning is a collective process; that arts as a pedagogical mode tend to stimulate a certain cognitive flexibility; in particular, theater, proposing the assumption of other roles and other identities, seems useful to those who find themselves in conditions to learn another language. This methodology is based on the understanding, supported by countless neurolinguistic studies, that human learning benefits from two behavioral modes: imitation and contextualization. 

Halfway through the course, an assessment (Esonero) will allow self-assessment of the progress achieved by referring to the Common European Framework for Languages (DIPLE). The final (Orale) assessment will consist of a free-topic conversation in Portuguese, starting with the full reading of the theatrical texts covered. A translation test may be applied in case the conversation is not sufficient. The evaluation criteria will be: approved/not approved (Esonero) and votationi in thirtieths (Orale). At the evaluation stage, there will be no difference based on CDS.

FOR NON-FREQUENTING STUDENT
Non-attending students will have to register for a special roll call (exoneration) before the roll call (oral). The compulsory exoneration is held as a language proficiency test beginning with the translation of four scenes from each indicated play text. The translation must be submitted the week before the roll call. This will allow evaluation by the teacher based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (DIPLE). Later, also on the same day, it will be possible to proceed with the oral examination, which will consist of a free-topic conversation in Portuguese from the topics covered in the translated texts.
