Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento di LINGUA E LETTERATURA ANGLO-AMERICANA MAGISTRALE rientra nell'ambito della formazione letteraria magistrale.
L'insegnamento è mirato a esporre gli studenti a problemi, testi e autori chiave della letteratura statunitense soprattutto del XIX, XX e XXI secolo. L'insegnamento mira altresì a rafforzare le abilità critiche e analitiche degli studenti in relazione a tipologie testuali-letterarie specifiche, che comprendono diversi sottogeneri narrativi e la critica e l'interpretazione letteraria. Ulteriore obiettivo è di sviluppare abilità di scrittura critica (solo per studenti 9 cfu) e di lettura critica del testo.This course contributes to the development of intellectual tools for literary study and interpretation for MA students. It aims at presenting problems, texts and key-authors of mostly 19th, 20th and 21st century North-American literature. This course also aims at developing critical and analytical skills in the poetry, fiction and literary and cultural criticism and at helping students develop academic writing skills.

Questo insegnamento sviluppa abilità di pensiero critico, studio autonomo, iniziativa e capacità organizzative. Attraverso le discussioni seminariali svolte durante le lezioni e lo studio individuale dei testi primari e secondari dell'insegnamento , gli studenti acquisiscono strumenti critici e analitici per la comprensione e la ricerca nel campo dei testi complessi della tradizione culturale e letteraria statunitense. Imparano altresì a inquadrarli nelle problematiche teorico-critiche, storiche, culturali i interpretative a cui quei testi fanno riferimento e a produrre testi scritti di critica e interpretazione letteraria avanzata nel campo degli American Studies.
This course aims at developing abilities of critical thinking, independent study and initiative. Seminar discussions and individual study of the syllabushelp students acquire critical and analytical instruments for udestanding and conducting research in the field of North-American literature and culture. They also learn to place those texts within theoretical, critical, and historical contexts and to produce written analyses of those texts.

Studio individuale dei testi primari e secondari e preparazione brevi relazioni scritte (solo per studenti con 9 cfu) PROPEDEUTICHE alla lezione. Durante le lezioni: discussione seminariale dei testi primari e secondari; presentazione materiali video (solo studenti 9 cfu); presentazione e commento delle relazioni scritte degli studenti.
During class: seminar discussion of primary and secondary texts; presentation of written papers and feedback. Individual study of primary and secondary texts and short papers as PREPARATORY to the sessions in class.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Tre take-home papers (da consegnare almeno 7 giorni prima dell'esame scritto - e solo per gli studenti che acquisiscono 9 crediti), un esame scritto finale (per tutti) e un colloquio orale (per tutti, al quale si accede dopo il superamento dello scritto). Gli esami scritti vengono regolarmente offerti durante le regolari sessioni, una volta per sessione, sino alla sessione autunnale 2019, dopo la quale entrerà in vigore un nuovo programma. E' necessario aver superato l'esame scritto per poter essere ammessi al colloquio orale finale. Vd. anche nota "studenti non frequentanti" più sopra.
Three take-home papers (to be submitted as indicated in the course blog at least 7 days prior to the written exam - ONLY FOR 9 CFREDIT STUDENTS), one written exam, one oral interview (after passing the written exam). Exams are offered in the winter, summer and fall sessions of 2019. After 2019, a NEW SYLLABUS will apply.

STUDENTI NON FREQUENTANTI: Gli studenti non in grado di frequentare regolarmente dovranno incontrare il docente durante il ricevimento PRIMA dell'inizio del corso e dovranno comunque seguire la PRIMA LEZIONE del corso.
PROGRAMMA RIDOTTO 6 CFU: gli studenti i cui piani carriera prevedono l'acquisizione di 6 cfu sono tenuti a prepararsi su tutti i materiali coperti nelle lezioni del GIOVEDI' (12 lezioni, ovvero 2/3 del corso) e non su quelli coperti nelle elzioni del venerdì (6 lezioni, ovvero 1/3 del corso). Understanding America: Key Concepts.

The course examines what "America" means and what it means to be "American", addessing questions such as whether the term "American" has a singular or plural definition or if there is any common culture or fund of shared values that unites Americans of widely different backgrounds. Will do so by discussing key concepts of American Studies, including exceptionalism, manifest destiny, nature, violence, democracy, race, migration, mobility, urban modernity, American Century, multiculturalism, post-nationalism. Spanning over 3 centuries of American culture, the readings in this course will help students become familiar with major topics in that culture, as expressed in the literature from the 17th through the 21st century.
This class, fully taught in English, will be conducted as a weekly seminar: students will be expected to show weekly progress through the course materials by way of classroom presentations and written assignments.
Non attending students (an oxymoron as long as this course is concerned) MUST meet with professsor during office hourse PRIOR to the beginning of the course and ATTEND AT LEAST the first session of the course.
